Where to Celebrate?
"Divine Mercy Sunday" is another title given by the Holy See to the Second Sunday of Easter. This was instituted by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, when he declared that from now on throughout the Church the Second Sunday of Easter will also be called Divine Mercy Sunday. The Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship on May 5, 2000, formalized this declaration and by its inclusion in the Roman Missal made it binding throughout the universal Church. Therefore, every Catholic parish as it celebrates the Mass of the Second Sunday of Easter is also celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday. Whether announced as such or not, the graces of Divine Mercy Sunday promised by Jesus are available to the faithful. Jesus made known this promise when He spoke through St. Faustina:
My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet (Diary 699).
It is important for the faithful to know that on this day, the last day of the Octave of Easter when the Lord instituted the Sacrament of the Reconciliation, the Lord desires to grant through the Church the grace of complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. This grace is available when the faithful worthily receive Holy Communion. Plenary indulgence is also granted on this day by the Church.
The list of churches found below are celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday in a festive or a more solemn way. Please keep in mind that the graces of Divine Mercy Sunday are available at each Mass celebrated on this day in every Catholic Church around the world.
Many locations around the world will be celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday this year. If you know of a place not on this list, let us know!
